HOUSING FOR ASYLUM SEEKERS POSTCARD CAMPAIGN

"HOUSING IS A HUMAN RIGHT"
POSTCARD CAMPAIGN

November 2009

The ASANA coalition of agencies has launched a post-card campaign calling on the Commonwelath Minister for Housing, Hon Tanya Plibersek, to include asylum seekers in solutions to homelessness in Australia.

The post card reads:

Dear Minister Plibersek,

I am deeply concerned about the current homelessness of
asylum seekers living in the community. This group have no
access to public housing and are not eligible for housing as set
out in the 'The Road Home' Homelessness White Paper.

To date the group has been ignored in discussions about critical
housing issues. This is not in keeping with International law, or
the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Article 25).

As a result of these people's immigration status, community
funded agencies are struggling to find adequate housing for
hundreds of men, women and children who are homeless.

I encourage you to include asylum seekers in solutions to
homelessness in Australia.

Yours sincerely,
